Dirty Fingers

As a trainer, and yes, fitness guru, I am constantly reading and learning about everything health-related.  I love to know things so I can be better at my job. In the past, I would just hang out in the health section of a Borders and read through the aisle.  As times have changed and bookstores are more scarce, I have added podcasts as a source of information.  There is a bunch of cool ones out there, many of which have been recommended to me by clients trying to make a lifestyle change.

Podcasts are great because in Los Angeles we are trapped in our cars with a lot of useless time on our hands so it’s a perfect distraction. There are some great ones that feature some amazing speakers from ultra marathoners, to neurosurgeons, and even the founder of Whole Foods.

Before and After

Although intriguing to look at, I’ve always hated before and after pictures because they imply an untruth. The before image is of a sad sap, overweight and dumpy.  The after is a picture of a trimmer, suddenly tanned, buff version of themselves. It’s as if by the mere nature of losing 20 pounds the “after” person’s life is now flawless, all of their troubles have vanished, they have a smoking hot girlfriend/boyfriend, a large bank account, and great friends to party with.

In truth, there is no before and there is no after, there is only NOW.

This workout, this day, and choices made in this moment are all the factors in the image of you.  If you are unhappy in your body, then, no, you won’t feel good today or any other.  It is not empowering to walk around day after day in a body you despise. Live with distinction. Make plans, make goals and complete them. If you don't push yourself, how will you ever succeed?

Distinction

On my desktop right now is a file entitled “Life with Distinction” and inside lists my goals for 2017. We are a sum of our habits — some are good, but some we’d like to kick. Living with precision doesn’t mean I am throwing the old me out the window to start over again, but merely being aware of my patterns and making decisions about what each day looks like.

One big change for me is going to be planning. If you are like me, you run from planning like the villain in a tangled Spiderman web in my son’s comic books. This doesn’t mean my days won’t be spontaneous, but even with random time, workouts, or meditation time I am going to block it off in my phone calendar.
