Here are some small ways to fight obesity.

Strange Shapes

By Susan Howard

On my recent vacation, I got a close look at a portion of our country, middle America. Here in Los Angeles, it’s all about the pretty people, the hyper-fit, the plastic, and the perfect.  Yes, L.A. has it’s own issues, but you don’t really see the obese population like you might in other parts of the U.S.

It’s incredible to me the different shapes people become when they over eat and under move.  It’s like their tummies are attached to their thighs, while their legs and calves are super fit to hold up the entire ship.  When I see regular-sized heads with narrow shoulders encased by this crazy fat frame, it’s really shocking.

I may sound mean here, but I am not poking fun, I am actually alarmed at the mismatch.  We are f@#!ing up!  I constantly worry that I am not doing enough as a trainer.  Yes, I encourage my clients, but that’s such a small fraction; it’s feels ..read more

Weight loss starts by loving yourself and then getting more active in your daily life.

What’s Wrong With YOU

By Susan Howard

One of the blocks to successful weight loss is feeling bad about yourself.  You’re a blob.  You have no will power.  You are lazy.  You will never look like Channing Tatum or Jessica Alba or whoever is seemingly hotter than you.  So why bother?  The reason we get heavier and heavier is we have given up on ourselves.

Maybe we were in shape, but we got injured or had a lifestyle change — married, divorced, family tragedy, new job, depression the list goes on.  We are very good at coming up with excuses that even WE believe.  Random reasons we can’t make time to exercise.

Well, all that is going to end NOW.

Hear this.

You are GREAT.  Whatever size, whatever shape, you are wonderful and sexy and amazing.  First things first, we must love ourselves.  Easy to write or say and super hard to do.

There was a study done with women in which half were handed a notebook with an ultra ..read more

Love yourself if you dare

By Susan Howard

Recently I got into an email battle with an author that I quoted in a post on my site. She was upset about how I pleaded with readers to stop buying food in large quantities which often leads to overeating. Love yourself at any weight is the driving message in her book and she was claiming that I was being hurtful to the overweight population. I was talking with one of my successful weight loss clients (75 lbs. down) and she wisely replied, “What about loving yourself enough to take CARE of yourself.” I couldn’t agree more.

My goal in working with clients is to get them close to their “set” weights. Unless you are an actor or an underwear model, why bother with anything else? No, my client isn’t a size two, but she went down 10 sizes and can fit into most anything she wants. She looks and feels great and has re-gained energy, confidence and control ..read more

Let’s Not Make a Deal

By Susan Howard

Everybody loves a deal.  Getting more for less has been an American slogan for decades.  Our waistlines (or lack there of) have also been increasing for years.  Let me tell you this, get RIPPED OFF when buying food.  Yes, that’s right, buy small portions of fresh delicious food and avoid things that are labeled “Family Size” or “Value Pack”, believe me it’s no value to be obese, just ask any medical professional.

Let’s go back a minute and see how this whole idea of getting more for less started…

In the 60’s a man named David Wallerstein owned movie theaters and wanted to increase concession sales. He tried to convince people to buy more than one popcorn, but nobody did because they felt glutenous getting two.  Desperate for a profit, they doubled the amount of one popcorn because it was so cheap to make, it didn’t really matter, and sold it for 10 cents more.  People started picking the bigger size ..read more
